The desire to get thin by any means possible starts innocently enough. A woman looks in the mirror and thinks, “There is no way I will get into this dress by my class reunion next month. I&#8217;ve got to do something, ANYTHING to get this weight off.” And so begins the spiral into crash dieting. Despite having known about the reunion for some time, she waits until the last minute and then expects miracles. And she&#8217;ll do anything to get it.<br/><br />
While slow and steady wins the weight loss race, we all fall prey to the lure of crash dieting now and then, not wanting to spend the time or the energy to lose weight safely. Like Veruca Salt in “Willy Wonka,” we &#8220;want it now!&#8221; Despite being bombarded with information touting the dangers of crash dieting, we ignore the sensible in exchange for the fantasy, and it doesn’t take a psychology degree to figure out why: we want results, quick as we can get them. We rationalize our crash dieting with thoughts of &#8220;It&#8217;s just a couple of pounds.&#8221; Common sense leaves and emotions run high to lose those 5, 10 or even 20 or more pounds quickly.<br/><br />
A “diet,” though literally referring to the food we eat, is understood colloquially as a limiting of calories in order to lose weight or excess body fat, in the pursuit of a healthier body. A crash diet, on the other hand, is extreme. They forbid particular foods or entire food groups, and frequently cut off supplies of important vitamins and minerals that we need to thrive. Oftentimes, these crash diets are commercialized, and you can only eat at certain times, or drink specific shakes, eat cookies or call for “cleanses” of your body.  Some crash diets can limit you to under 500 calories in a day. They take out the guessing work of eating less, and depend on an adherence to a ritual and loss of control.<br/><br />
It seems that the need to fit in and the need to be thin override the basic sensibility of maintaining one&#8217;s health. The drive to look the way society dictates is appropriate outweighs the body&#8217;s innate mechanism for health. Crash dieting causes the body to go into preservation mode while the mind continues to beg for &#8220;just another pound&#8221; to come off.<br/><br />
The urge to lose weight can come for all sorts of reasons, but for many women swimsuit season can spur the urge to drop a quick 10 or more pounds without stopping to think about the ramifications of the decision. Linda Bacon, Ph.D., a nutrition professor and author was interviewed by Health.com about this urge to look good in a swimsuit. She says that &#8220;Early June and January are the two times of year that people do crazy, desperate things to get thin fast. They go on fasts, yo-yo diets, detox programs and &#8216;cleanses&#8217; without realizing that there are serious consequences to weight loss and nutrient restriction.” Dr. Bacon&#8217;s concern is echoed by other health professionals and dietitians.<br/><br />
Unfortunately, our desire to get the results without investing in a healthier lifestyle means that most of these diets set the dieter up for a short term fix, followed by weight gain when they return to old, bad habits, and will consequently return to the crash diet to find another quick fix. This yo-yo dieting can set a person up for a lifetime of failure. The dieter chases one fad after another in hopes of finding the final fix that works for good, because no crash diet is sustainable. If the weight loss from crash dieting were permanent, the companies responsible would go out of business, with no yo-yo dieters to return time and time again, with every inevitable five-pound gain.<br/><br />
Crash dieters frequently restrict calories to such a huge extent that their blood sugar crashes, which makes people fatigued. This is because your brain needs glucose to thrive, and when blood sugar levels drop that low, your brain is starved for nutrients.<br/><br />
In an article posted on CNN.com, cardiologist Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D. states that these extreme diets are based on the theory that the body needs help eliminating waste. What they do, instead, is weaken the immune system, cause dehydration and can cause cardiac stress as the heart is compromised by repeated nutrition deficits.<br/><br />
With a growing number of Americans considered overweight, it is understandable that dieting has become an obsession. Combined with the media-driven standard of perfection and our expectation of instant gratification, it seems that crash dieting has found its niche. As with any crash though, the best thing is to be able to walk away.<br/><br />

This addiction gives many people a sense that without the salt and sugar you are used to in its various forms, that the food is bland. Nothing is further from the truth if you know how to use other herbs and seasonings than salt and sugar.<br/><br />

Lose Love Handles<br/><br />
We all want flat stomachs to to lose love handles. To do so we must first know where they come from. When we know how we get them and the real effect to our health we may be motivated to get lose our love handles. Truly this excess fat around the mid section is the stored fat for our body. The mid section is the predominant fat storage for men and to a lesser extent for women whose fat is stored more on the hips, thighs and buttocks. The accumulation of this excess fat, or love handles, has been associated with greater health risks such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes to name a few. So to lose your love handles is very important for your health as well as your physical appearance.<br/><br />
3 Ways to Lose Love Handles.<br/><br />
There are 3 ways to get rid of the excess stomach fat: Eat a healthy diet (low fat and high fiber); exercise regularly (cardio, resistance training, stretching and core exercises); and natural nutritional vitamin supplements ( Advocare Herbal Cleanse, Meal Replacement Shake and Spark Energy Drink). We will focus on regular exercise here.<br/><br />
Exercises To Lose Love Handles.<br/><br />
Many people think sit ups and crunches are the key to a flatter stomach, but to lose you stomach fat you must do a complete body work out. Stretching, Cardio, Resistance Training and Core Exercises are all necessary for six pack abs or just to get rid of the bulge.<br/><br />
Stretching.<br/><br />
Stretching loosens your muscles and prepares them for exercise. Stretching helps you avoid injury and allows you to do more during your workout as well as helps you avoid injury. It is imperative to stretch as part of your warm up and cool down as well as periodically throughout any exercise routine. Stretching is a key to yoga and pilates routines which either could help you burn stomach fat.<br/><br />
Cardio.<br/><br />
Aerobic exercise was often though of as the only way to lose weight and burn calories which is a myth. Cardio is important to build your heart and burn a few calories but it must be part of a total exercise program. That said to burn the fat you must increase your cardio. Simply put, a brisk 30 minute walk daily would help tremendously as you burn calories and reduce your gut. If you increase your intensity and our your workout duration you can burn the fat completely. Have you ever seen a runner with a beer belly? So my cardio program is always my initial focus to lose my love handles.<br/><br />
Resistance Training.<br/><br />
This is the key to burn fat and keep it off, especially the mid section. I am not talking heavy weight lifting (it helps) but any regular exercise program that builds muscle mass. Muscle requires more energy than fat. Therefore muscle mass increases your metabolism and helps you burn through the carbohydrates and into the fat. The objective to lose love handles is met by burning more excess fat which is what love handles are. Resistance training and building muscle anywhere on your body burns fat and helps reduce your stomach fat. Building muscle also allows you to burn more fat when you are not exercising. This is due to your resting metabolic rate has increased and you burn more energy (and fat) even when you are sleep or resting. A strength training program 3 to 4 days a week for 30 to 45 minutes working different muscle groups will help you burn the midsection fat.<br/><br />
Core Training.<br/><br />
True core training is a combination of stretching, aerobic exercise, and resistance training focused on the core of your body which is the abdominal and lower back muscles. crunches, sit-ups, and ab machines alone do not get rid of the love handles. They work those muscles. Ultimately you will just have a stronger core, but the fat is still there. Yes you must strengthen your core and build those abdominal muscles, but without a total exercise program of stretching, cardio and resistance training the fat and love handles will still be there. Fat and muscle are two different things. and we must both burn fat and add muscle to lose the love handles.<br/><br />
Complete Healthy Weight Loss Program.<br/><br />
It is easy to focus on one area of your healthy weight loss program and ignore others. Success comes in balance and focus. If we have a good exercise program and do not eat right we are still not healthy and will not find success in meeting our goals. These are all factors that our jobs may contribute to our being over weight as a society and even the shortening of our lifespan. This may sound dramatic, but dying too soon is dramatic for us baby boomers!<br/><br />
A typical day at the office? <br/><br />
Exploring our lifestyles many baby boomers spend much of the day at work. To live a healthy life and increase our longevity we need to make a few minor changes in our lives, especially at our workplace.<br/><br />
First, we need to reduce stress and increase our physical exercise. They go hand in hand. One way to do this is to make sure we get up and get away from our desks and offices during the day. Get out during lunch and even take a short brisk walk. This can clear our minds and Relieve Stress. Actually, this small change not only reduces stress and increases our physical exercise, it also improves our circulation which improves the complete functioning of our bodies. We get more physical exercise, fresh air, and sunshine. All these are important factors of increasing our longevity and losing weight. Research has shown that the people who live the longest are those that get fresh air, sunshine and work with their hands versus there minds. We all do not have those choices but we can improve our lifestyle by incorporating this small change.<br/><br />
Lunch Time Walk<br/><br />

Secondly, we need to actively plan our meals. We should not let our day, our jobs, or even our finances dictate how we eat. In our careers we plan to be successful. We prepare and we execute our business plan. Let us also plan and execute our &#8220;Life Plan&#8221;. So we are not blown to and fro by any wind of the day. Most people do not plan their meals and make up their minds at the last minute what they will eat and drink that day. This is not only detrimental but DEADLY! It is our life at stake! We are playing for keeps. If you fail to plan, in essence, WE Plan to Fail.<br />
Plan your meals! Eat healthy! Drink plenty of water! You will succeed with a healthy life and weight loss if you plan your meals and execute your plan, for it is a way of LIFE.<br/><br />

Finally, consider sleep. As we plan our days, especially our work day, adding physical exercise, fresh air, sunshine, healthy living and balanced eating. This will all reduce stress and help us sleep better. These are all as important as your &#8220;weight loss plan&#8221;, &#8220;diet&#8221;, &#8220;potions and lotions&#8221; and &#8220;exercise routines&#8221; to help you lose weight and live longer.<br/><br />

A healthy breakfast will also aid your cognitive skills as you will be more alert with a sharper more focused mind. Also a healthy breakfast helps your digestive system which is key to overall health and weight loss.<br/><br />

A cleansed digestive system helps you eliminate unwanted toxins, break down and remove &#8220;bad&#8221; fats which are sometimes stored and cause weight gain. To truly lose weight we need to eat healthy food regularly and we can not rely on hunger as a guide of when to eat. As noted on &#8220;A Weight Lifted&#8221; With the diet mentality, though, whether we eat breakfast or not usually isn&#8217;t about hunger.  Indeed, many people who  struggle with their weight can no longer even tell when they&#8217;re hungry and when they&#8217;re not. Instead, dieters are all about trying to eat as little as they can, regardless of hunger. The different complications of this approach to eating are numerous, but have a common outcome.  We end up with distorted eating patterns and behaviors that don&#8217;t get us where we want to go.<br/><br />
Start your day with a glass of water before your meal. The average person should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day unless they have a medical condition which prohibits this. If you are very active you may need to drink more water to stay hydrated and keep your metabolism at a high level. Water not only hydrates you and increases your metabolism it also fills you up to help you eat smaller portions. Lastly by drinking 8 or more glasses of water daily your body gets used to you drinking the water and does not retain the water weight.<br/><br />
Start your day with breakfast that is smaller portions than many of us normally eat. Your portion sizes are dependent upon many different factors. Check mypyramid.gov for the correct portions for you. Eat six meals a day: Breakfast; Morning Snack; Lunch; Afternoon Snack; Dinner; and Evening Snack. Focus on fresh fruit, raw vegetables, whole grain cereals, fiber and protein. Limit the meat and bread you eat.<br/><br />
Variety makes this all possible. Alternate your fruits vegetables and recipes daily. Not only does this help you keep interest but each fruit and vegetable offer different vitamins and nutrients. Research has shown that our bodies also respond better to a variety of foods and especially a range of calories.<br/><br />
No conversation on weight loss is complete without mentioning exercise. A simple key to understanding weight loss is you lose weight when you burn more calories than you consume. Drinking 8 glasses of water, Eating Early, Often, Less and Healthy helps your metabolism and reduces your total calorie intake. This helps you lose weight but exercise helps you even more and improves your total health.<br/><br />

First and foremost you must realize you have a problem and be motivated to fix the problem. Your Weight Loss Plan<br/><br />
Just like your motivation your weight loss plan has to be personal and come from within. That is not to suggest you create a plan out of your imagination  and hope it works.
